Allegheny Scale Models - Introduction

Allegheny Scale Models is a Limited Liability Company that specializes in out of production brass models in all model railroad scales.  We sell ready to run and custom built models, craftsman kits, track, decals, and other items.

In addition to our website, we advertise in a number of popular model railroad publications, including Model Railroader, Railroad Model Craftsman, Model Railroad News, O Scale Trains, and the O Scale Resource online magazine.

The ASM Website

The ASM website includes numerous models in many scales.  The menu selections to the left will bring you to our special collections or to the specific scale you are interested in.  For each collection or scale, you will find a unique page that identifies the specific categories of models available.  The models in each category are then generally listed by type and road name.

All newly listed models are summarized on the New Models page.  This page is updated when new listings are added, when new photographs are added to previous listings, or when prices for previous listings are reduced.

Each website page includes the date it was last updated.  The date is changed only when new models are added to that page.

Orders & Payment

Since we mostly deal with out of production model railroad items, we recommend that you call or email us before placing an order to ensure that the item is still available.  You can reach us by phone at 908-436-7581.  If you call and we are unavailable please leave a message letting us know what you are interested in purchasing and we will return your call as soon as possible.  We are always available by email at oscale@alleghenyscale.com.  If you are requesting a total for an item with shipping, please include your full shipping address in your correspondence.

All in stock models are subject to prior sale.

We are not able to accept direct internet orders from the ASM website.  We do accept money orders and personal checks.  We also accept credit card payments directly and through PayPal.   For our international customers, we request that payments be made in U.S. funds by PayPal, credit card, or bank wire transfer.  For international orders above $2,500.00, we only accept payments by bank wire transfer.

Domestic payments by PayPal, Visa, Mastercard, and Discover are subject to a 3.35% transaction fee.  The fee is 3.85% for American Express.  International PayPal, Visa, Mastercard, and Discover Credit Card payments carry a 4.75% transaction fee.  The international American Express fee is 5.25%.

If you would like to complete your purchase by credit card, please contact us by phone to arrange payment.

We accept lay-away purchases when practical.  Please contact us for terms.

Given the number of models that we have available, we often receive a large number of requests for photographs.  We satisfy these requests in the order that we receive them, but it does take some time.  Please note that given the interest in many of our listings, we are generally not able to hold a model pending photographs, and the model that you are interested in is subject to prior sale.

Reservations For New Models

We accept reservations for newly announced brass and ready to run models for the importers and manufacturers listed above.  Once your reservation is confirmed by the importer or manufacturer, we will send you a written receipt for your order.  Payment is due when the pickup notice arrives.  We will notify you immediately to arrange for payment and delivery after we are invoiced by the importer.

Professional Model Servicing

All models are reviewed and evaluated prior to listing them for sale.  Many of the models currently available in the secondary market require some degree of attention prior to making them available. Selected models are professionally serviced prior to listing, to ensure their optimal appearance and operation. Professionally serviced models are indicated in the condition section of the listing. Additional detail can be found here: Professional model servicing.

Condition Standards

We try to be objective in describing the models that we sell.  Please check our "Condition Standards" page for an explanation of our model description guidelines.  We have separate grading standards for models and for their original boxes.  We also have grading standards for our listed railroad books.

Packing & Shipping

We will provide you a shipping quote when you place your order.  All packages are shipped insured with appropriate tracking, and our shipping quote will include costs for these services.  We pack all items with extreme care.  Our preferred domestic shipping methods are UPS Ground and USPS Priority Mail.

For our international customers, please keep in mind that different countries have specific limits for both insurance and total package value.  In general, we use USPS International Priority Mail for lower value packages. For those of greater value, we use DHL or UPS express services in order to best comply with specific import regulations.  Although somewhat more costly, these services are better suited for higher value models.

Please be aware that there can be limits on the amount of insurance that can be purchased for some high value International shipments.  In these cases the customer assumes responsibility for the amount of the shipment in excess of the allowable insurance value.  We value our International shipments for customs purposes based on the actual sale price of the item.  The customer is responsible for all applicable duties and fees.

If a model is damaged in shipping, please contact us as soon as possible.  Also, please retain all shipping and packaging materials.  All shipping damage claims are processed as stipulated by the carrier.

Returns

We try to provide accurate and objective descriptions of all of the models that we have listed, and are always happy to answer any questions that you may have.  Should a problem arise, we will work with you directly to resolve it.  To be eligible for a return, we ask the buyer to notify us within a reasonable time after the model arrives.  The model must be returned to us in the same condition as when it was shipped.  We do not accept returns for those items described “As Is” in the listing.

Customers who return a model will receive either a credit or a refund of the original purchase price.  The buyer is responsible for all packing and shipping costs for a returned item.
