Prototype History
The GLa Class of 50 Ton Twin Hopper Cars was One of the Most Numerous Class of Hoppers Owned by the Pennsylvania Railroad - The GLa’s Numbered Over 30,000 Cars Built Between 1904 and 1911 - Most of the Cars Were Rebuilt and Upgraded Over the Years - Changes Over Time Included the Replacement of the Original Arch Bar Trucks with PRR 2D-F8 Cast Trucks, Replacement of KD Brake Systems With AB Brakes, and the Addition of Structural Reinforcement Plates on the Sides and Frames - The GLa’s operated in Significant Numbers Well Into the 1950’s on the PRR and into the 1980’s on Many Private Coal Companies
